Today, there are several great waterproof products to keep your child and your mattress dry – all aimed to reduce mattress damage and excessive laundry. Here is a brief overview with many more tips included in the book.

Waterproof Overlays

These absorbent pads are ideal for making the transition from disposable pants to regular underwear. They are available in both disposable and washable. The washable absorbent pads are much less expensive in the long run and are much more environmentally friendly. Place the overlay over the bottom sheet to keep bedding dry. After a wetting episode, simply remove one pad and put a clean one in its place to sleep in a dry bed. They are available in several sizes and some have tuck-in sides to help secure the pad in place.

Vinyl covers

Zippered vinyl covers protect your mattress from spills, stains, odors and dust mites. Vinyl covers are an inexpensive way to add years of life to your mattress and lock out moisture and allergens. They are an inexpensive investment that are a good idea for every mattress in your house.

Waterproof Mattress Pads

Waterproof mattress pads are a great investment that often are no more expensive than regular mattress pads. A waterproof barrier – typically vinyl – is sewn/bonded to the mattress pad to protect the mattress from moisture. When the mattress pad gets wet, it can be washed and dryed (low heat). Once a mattress is stained by urine, it is difficult to restore the mattress to its original condition. Make sure you choose a pad that uses a skirt to stay securely in place, is absorbent and quiet.

Urine Odor & Stain Remover

You may want to seek out a quality urine odor and stain remover to use on your mattress before you cover it with a vinyl or pad to protect it from future accidents. You will know if a product is of good quality if it is enzyme based – one that actually breaks down urine components rather than covering them up.
